Year Group(s): Reception
Mrs Burnett teaches this class of lovely Reception children Monday to Thursday. On Friday Miss Richardson teaches our class. Mrs Evans our teaching assistant is also very much involved in our daily play and learning. This class is called ‘Dentdale’ and is named after one of the nearest of the Yorkshire Dales to Ingleton.
We enjoy learning through practical play activities, wherever possible, in our light and airy classroom and attractive surrounding outdoor areas.
We follow the EYFS curriculum for Reception children. Our curriculum activities are meaningful and fun. There are seven areas of learning and development that shape the curriculum in Reception. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving. These are the prime areas:
• communication and language
• physical development
• personal, social and emotional development
We also support children in four specific areas, through which the
three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:
• literacy
• mathematics
• understanding the world
• expressive arts and design
In planning and guiding what children learn, we reflect on the different rates at which children are developing and adjust our practice appropriately. Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:
• playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have
a go’
• active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter
difficulties, and enjoy achievements
• creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas,
make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things
We spend a lot of time outdoors in Reception, enjoying the changing seasons, learning about animals and plants and exploring the natural world.

CURRICULUM
Reception Long Term Plan 2024-2025
The Early years Foundation stage curriculum sets standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to 5-years-old. It’s the first stage of a child’s education. It ends when a child enters Key Stage One.
The EYFS is aimed at supporting the learning and development of children from birth to five years of age. It is broken down in to clear ages and stages of development, so you can easily find guidance and information for the specific age group that you need.
The Early Years curriculum supports children in the seven Areas of Learning and Development by providing a learning environment to best enable children to thrive and develop as well as be happy and healthy!
Children’s fascinations, interests and developmental stage are at the heart of all our planning. We follow the seasons and celebrations throughout the year. Each cohort of children will lead their own learning and Topics and themes will be different year on year to suit our children. Some themes you may see in Reception are farms, Polar regions, under the sea, animals, vehicles, traditional tales.
PHONICS
We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised programme for Phonics. Children receive focussed, daily Phonics lessons and do group reading 3 times a week with an adult.
Information for parents can be found here https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
In Addition to Phonics we share daily, high quality stories, information texts and poems. We also ensure children take home two books a week from our carefully selected box of home sharing books.
We expect children to read with an adult a minimum of 3 times a week at home. This helps to develop a lifelong love of reading and to enhance their Phonic knowledge and fluency.
